The Meaning of PanCrib

PanCrib has 2 significant meanings as great thought was put into developing a name that would represent the brainchild of founder Rojenna Holligan.

The first meaning is, PanCrib is a Music academy teaching persons from a young age (Crib) to learn music through steelpan. This provides young children who have no previous musical background to learn about music and have an education in it.

The other meaning for PanCrib is that it’s a HOME, whereas a music family we can bond as we learn, eat, play and enjoy each other’s company.

This also provides a unique opportunity for the PanCrib crew to connect with other steelpan communities worldwide.

PanCrib Through the Years

This camp started in 2016 with the objective of teaching, empowering and tutoring young minds.  The Pancrib Music academy provides students with a passion for music the opportunity to learn more about music through the steelpan.  This camp is a holistic camp as campers go on tours to local places of interest, do crafts, network with other musicians across the Barbadian landscape, learn music theory and most importantly, get to show what they have learnt at the end of camp at the Pan Extravaganza.

PanCrib 2021

This year our camp will be held at The Golden Grove Great House and will be from Monday, August 2nd and will end Friday, August 27th with the Pan Extravaganza on the 28th of August.

We provide professional training, teaching on sight reading, coaching and mentorship. This camp will also include arts and crafts, webinars by esteemed musicians and tours, (see schedule for more information).

‘For the love of music’ is an understatement when describing the lifestyle of this phenomenal young lady.  This 21 year old musician is currently pursuing a BA in Music Education with intentions of furthering her studies to include a Masters in Music Education.

A journey of humble beginnings started at the young age of 8 years old. Where this young lady was enrolled in the ‘Pan in the Plaza’ now ‘Youth Pan Project’ summer camp hosted by the Central Bank of Barbados.  It was there that this primary school junior was first introduced to steelpan. It was love at first sight so she attended the summer programme annually.

This talented lady had the honour of playing for her Primary School Graduation and continued her music excellence when she entered Secondary school.  There she completed the Royal School of Music ABRSM theory Grades 1-5, ABRSM clarinet grades 4-5 and she received a Grade 1 in the CSEC Music examinations her exceptional work landed her 2nd in the Caribbean Region that year.  Music was deeply enriched into her lifestyle as she played in the Kolij Steel Ensemble and The Harrison College Orchestra where she received the school’s Merit tie for her outstanding achievements in the latter.

Her passion continues to flourish as she has a BA in Music with Education. In addition, her musical talent is not limited to the steel pan, she also boasts of the ability to play the Flute,Saxophone(Soprano and Alto), Trumpet, Drums,Guitar, Piano and Clarinet.

To date her greatest achievement is founding and managing PanCrib Music Academy where she teaches, trains and mentors young children from the age of 6.  This is in addition to tutoring at the Blackman and Gollop Primary School. She laments that watching the development and flourishment of her students brings her the greatest pride. This young lady is none other that Rojenna Holligan.

Rojenna’s intention after the completion of her studies is to revamp the music curriculum in Barbados so that each child has access to the same musical opportunities.
